Bible Study - Proverbs 20:9-16

WIS: Who is actually able to say that they have kept their heart pure and that they are clean and without sin? Differing weights and differing measures are both detested by God. Even a child is known by his actions; whether it is pure and right. The Lord has made the eyes for seeing and the ears for hearing. Those that love sleep will grow poor. Stay awake and you will have food to spare. The buyer complains to the seller how the product is no good, and then he goes and boasts about his purchase to others. Gold and rubies are abundant compared to lips that speak knowledge. Take the garment of the one that puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if he does it for a wayward woman.

WIT: None of us can say we are without fault. The second we try to snub our nose in such a way there is always somebody there to remind us of the things that we have done! Just because we assume that everyone thinks we are good the truth is often known. Even a child is known by his actions. People will view us by our actions not by what we say. I can say I am perfect all day long, but if I act like an idiot I am not perfect I am an idiot. Instead of bragging about the few good things you do, just do well and wait for others to edify your achievements. Then when others say you are good, then you are!

TBV: 20:13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.

Bible Study - Proverbs 20:1-8

WIS: Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler; whoever is lead astray by them is not wise. He who angers the king forfeits his life as his wrath is like the roar of a lion. The honorable man avoids strife but every fool is quick to quarrel. Sluggards do not plow in season so at harvest time he looks and finds nothing. The purposes of a man’s heart are like deep waters but the man of understanding can draw them out. Many men claim to have an unfailing love but the faithful man is hard to find. The righteous man lives a blameless life and blessed are his children. As the king sits on his throne to judge he will winnow out all evil with his eyes.

WIT: We should not be quick to anger against one another. It is often that people do things to us to make us feel wronged. Many times those actions or words are not intended to hurt us. Two things one people are not perfect. Remember that you too will eventually do something to another that will hurt them; how would you want them to respond? Secondly, to truly understand the meaning or purpose we have to try and see through the depths. Just as it is hard to see to the bottom of a very deep lake or ocean it is even tougher to see into the heart of another. Our only way in is to ask questions and seek to understand. If we tell them how they hurt us and search for the true meaning of their actions we can come to a peaceful conclusion. Honor is only gained by keeping the peace. That entails keeping calm and seeing the whole picture.

TBV: 20:3 It is to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

Bible Study - Proverbs 19:24-29

WIS: The sluggard will bury his hand in the dish but is too lazy to even bring it to his mouth. Flog a mocker and simple will become prudent; rebuke the discerning and gain knowledge. The son who robs his father and drives his mother away brings shame and disgrace. Stop listening to instructions and you will stray from knowledge. Corrupt witnesses mock justice and the mouth of the wicked gulps down the evil. Penalties are prepared for the mockers and beatings for the backs of fools.

WIT: When we stop listening to those around us we are destined for doom. Ever have that friend that you told them something was bad for them? There may have been many people telling him to stay away from this person or thing. More often then not they will ignore you and continue to where their heart leads them. There is nothing you can do but love them and wait for them to see it for them self. If you are the one being told about a certain area of your life and truly examine this thing. Are your friends correct or being too hard on you? Only you can answer that!

TBV: 19:27 Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Bible Study - Proverbs 19:17-23

WIS: He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord and He will repay him for what he has done. Discipline your son by not doing so you are acting as a willing party to his death. Hot-tempered men must pay the penalty; if you rescue him you will just have to do it again. Listen to advice and accept the instruction; doing so will make you wise. The plans in the heart of man are many but the Lord’s purpose will prevail. Man desires unfailing love. It is better to be poor than a liar. The fear of the Lord leads to life.

WIT: It is easy to go at things alone. When we succeed we are victorious and nothing can stop us. When we fail God hates us and life is unfair! We are failing to recognize that God works in our lives. God places us in the places He wants us to be and introduces us to the people He needs us to meet. We have our desires, but His will is going to prevail. Sometimes we meet others who God says need something from us. Other times we meet those with the critical knowledge and experience that we are lacking. The way to know the difference is to trust in the Lord and treat everyone as an equal. Soon you will see what role you are needed to fulfill.

TBV: 19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.

Bible Study - Proverbs 19:9-16

WIS: False witnesses will not go unpunished and he who pours out lies will perish. It is not fitting to have a fool live in luxury. Wisdom provides patience and it is glorifying to overlook an offense. The king’s rage is like the roar of a lion but his favor is like dew on the grass. The foolish son will bring ruin to his father and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. Houses and wife are inherited from the parents but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Laziness brings on deep sleep and the shiftless will go hungry. Those that obey instructions are guarding their lives but those that are contemptuous in their ways will die.

WIT: Those that lie will perish. Just because you lie does not mean you will have a heart attack or get hit by a bus but it does mean that guilt will eat you alive. Have you ever lied to someone important to you? Didn’t the guilt just eat away at you? It is hard to sleep, eat or even look people in the eye. Every time you hear or see something that is similar to your lie you are reminded and that guilt grows stronger. You may be able to suppress it for awhile but eventually it will come to light. The wisdom that we gain over the years will hopefully tell us to be upfront and honest early on to avoid the nagging guilt. Whatever punishment you receive will not likely be as bad as what you are going to do to yourself.

TBV: 19:11 A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

Bible Study - Proverbs 19:1-8

WIS: It is better to be poor and blameless than a perverse fool What good is zeal without knowledge nor to be hasty and miss the way? A man’s own folly will ruin his life yet his heart rages against the Lord. Wealth brings many friends but the poor man’s friend deserts him. False witnesses will not go unpunished and who pours the lies will not go free. Many curry the favor of the ruler and all are friends with man who gives gifts. Poor men are shunned by their relatives and friends, even when they pursue them with pleading. He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who cherishes understanding prospers.

WIT: If you do not stand for something you will fall for anything! To have blind passion or aimless passion is pointless. If you are excited to act and to be something great but have no plans you are merely a dreamer. We need to plan a path and use that passion to get to where we want to be. This takes learning about the dream and setting goals to use as landmarks to get there. If we do not plan well it is not God’s fault we have failed it is our own.

TBV: 19:3 A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord.

Bible Study - Proverbs 18:17-24

WIS: The first to present a case appears to be right until another comes along and questions it. Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart. An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel. From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled and with the harvest of his lips he is satisfied. The tongue has the power of life and death and those that who love it will eat its fruit. He who finds a wife finds what is good and will receive favor from the Lord. Poor men plead for mercy but the rich answer harshly. A man of many companions may come to ruin but a friend will stick closer to him than a brother.

WIT: The first to state their case are often believed until the holes are pointed out. It is easy to say anything and have people believe you. How many times have you received an email from someone about a horrible product or story about a corporation doing someone wrong? After further investigation most of those turn out to be wrong or blown way out of proportion. Many believe what they hear the first time it is called the Law of Primacy and it states that the first thing you see or hear is what you believe until proven otherwise. It is a powerful tool of persuasion but also a tool used by fools who do not give thought to their speech.

TBV: 18:21 The tongue had the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Bible Study - Proverbs 18:9-16

WIS: The one who slacks in his work is the brother of the one that destroys. The name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous run to it and are saved. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city and they imagine it to be an unscalable wall. Before a man’s downfall his heart is proud, however, humility comes before honor. He who answers before listening falls to folly and shame. A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness but who can sustain a crushed spirit? The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge and the ears of the wise also seek it out. Gifts open the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great.

WIT: It doesn’t pay to be proud. Proverbs 18:12 states that the proud heart brings the downfall of the man. This means that through being too proud and stubborn to ask for help in the time of need can lead to your destruction. Before we can have honor we need humility. Those that are able to humble themselves in the name of God are able to ask for help much easier. They know that their power is not enough to make it through this tough time. Only God can truly deliver us and that is why we must run to God who is our strong tower!

TBV: 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

Bible Study - Proverbs 18:1-8

WIS: Unfriendly men pursue selfish ends and will defy all sound judgment. Fools find no pleasure in understanding and are delighted in airing their opinions. When wickedness comes so will contempt and with shame will come disgrace. Words from a man’s mouth are deep waters but the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook. It is not good to be partial to the wicked or deprive the innocent of justice. A fool’s lips will bring him strife and his mouth invites a beating. A fool’s mouth is his undoing and his lips are a snare to his soul. The words from a gossip are like choice morsels and will go down into the inmost parts of a man.

WIT: Many of us want nothing more than to shut the mouth of the office idiot. You know the one. The guy that knows everything and has done everything and always has his two cents to add. With all that he adds very little of it is of any value and often is counter-productive. It is almost fun to prove their lies wrong and belittle them. That is not what matters though. What does matter is how you treat them. If we are Christ-like we can gain his trust and subtly allow him to know that everyone knows he is lying. Most of these people just want to belong and be important. The best thing for everyone is not to shut them down, rather to build them up. If we can make them see the light then we can help them build a legacy that benefits everyone!

TBV: 18:2 A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.

Bible Study - Proverbs 17:22-28

WIS: A cheerful heart is good medicine but the crushed spirit dries up the bones. Wicked men accept bribes in secret to prevent the course of justice. Discerning men keep wisdom in view but the fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth. The foolish son brings bitterness to the ones that bore him and grief to his father. It is not good to punish the innocent or to flog officials for displaying integrity. Men of knowledge use words with restraint and a man of understanding is even-tempered. Even a fool is thought to be wise if he keeps silent and discerning if he holds his tongue.

WIT: When trying situations enter our lives we are initially faced with two choices that are instinctual: fight or flight. We can choose to react and attack this person that is hurting us or we can choose to run away from the attack. Both strategies serve a great purpose. I am going to reflect on fighting for now, though. Choosing to fight is not limited to physical fights or verbal arguments. Fighting is strategizing against another for the betterment of you. If you want get passed over for a promotion, instinct says to lash out with anger. However, first gain a cheerful heart and then seek understanding. Were you passed over because of your performance or was it the best decision for the company? Now you need to not punish the messenger for making a choice, restrain your words and actions. Then seek wisdom from others to get the whole picture. Finally, grow in the areas that you need to improve in.

TBV: 17:27 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.

Bible Study - Proverbs 17:15-21

WIS: The Lord detests acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent. What use is money in the hand of a fool since he has no desire to gain wisdom? Friends always love you and brothers are there for adversity. A man lacking judgment will strike his hand in pledge to put up a security for his neighbor. He who loves to quarrel loves to sin. He who builds a high gate only invites destruction. Men of perverse heart do not prosper and he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble. To have a fool as a son will bring grief and there is no joy for the father of a fool!

WIT: Trying to gain wisdom and understanding will allow you to prosper. Those who do not are likely to free the guilty and persecute the innocent out of ignorance. Gaining vast amounts of money is useless to the one that does not try to leverage it wisely. Ignorance will not earn you friends and will drive your family away. Being ignorant will invite scammers into your life who get you to vouch for them. Not understanding will push you to build strong defenses that people will see right through and push you to fight very quickly! Lastly, being ignorant is a slap in the face to your parents!

TBV: 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Bible Study - Proverbs 17:8-14

WIS: Bribes are charms to the one who gives it and wherever he turns, he succeeds. He who covers an offense promotes love but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. Rebukes impress men of discernment more than a hundred lashes would a fool. Evil men are only bent on rebellion; a merciless official will be sent against them. It is better to meet a bear robbed of its cubs than a fool in his folly. If evil is used to pay back good then evil will never leave the house. Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam! Drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

WIT: We fight because we feel disrespected! When it seems like someone crosses us we are ready to pounce. We want revenge when someone hurts us or doesn’t do what we think they should. Often we rebel when another wins an award that we think we deserve. This does us no good. Now our hearts are frozen over, we are consumed with how to get the other back, a snowball effect of anger has begun and we still have no award. When we strike another we are often struck harder. Just like a prank war that spirals out of control. It is always better to approach the situation with love and understanding.

TBV: 17:14 Stating a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Bible Study - Proverbs 17:1-7

WIS: Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than to have a house full of feasting with strife. The wise servant rules over the disgraceful son and will share the inheritance as one of the brothers. Silver is formed in the crucible and gold in the furnace but it is God that tests the heart. Wicked men listen to evil lips and liars pay attention to the malicious tongue. He who mocks the poor shows content to the maker and he who gloats over disaster will not go unpunished. Grandchildren are a crown to the aged and parents are the pride of their children. Arrogant lips are unsuited to a fool – how much worse lying lips to a ruler!

WIT: We all want to leave a legacy. We want our children to be proud of our accomplishments. To do this we can not be arrogant or listen to liars. We can not allow man to sway us as if we are fools. We have to learn the word of God and imprint that onto our hearts. Man will try to shape us into their mold as if we are silver and gold. We have to remember that material things are not what define us. To build a legacy we have to allow God to shape us from within our hearts.

TBV: 17:3 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.

Bible Study - Proverbs 16:25-33

WIS: The way that seems right to man leads to death. The appetite of the laborer drives his hunger to work on. The scoundrel plots evil and his speech is like a scorching fire. Perverse men stir up dissension and gossip separates close friends. A violent man entices his neighbor and leads down a path that is not good. He who winks his eye is plotting perversity and he who purses his lips is bent on evil. Gray hair is a crown of splendor attained by a righteous life. It is better to be a patient man than a warrior. Better the man who controls his temper than the one that takes a city. The lot is cast in the lap but its every decision is from the Lord.

WIT: Choose your battles. There is no possible way to win every single fight or argument. No matter, how abrasive or talented you are there is always someone better. Sometimes the battle you try to win is out of your control or the control of the other person. Basically, you are telling a wall it is wrong. There is no winning. The only battles worth fighting are those that are near and dear to your heart and those that truly affect you. If you are not sure have patience and get all the facts. The more prepared you are the better warrior you’ll be when the time comes for that fight.

TBV: 16:32 Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.

Bible Study - Proverbs 16:17-24

WIS: The highway of the upright avoids evil and he who guards his way guards his life. Pride precedes destruction and a haughty spirit comes before a fall. It is better to be lowly in the spirit and among the oppressed than to share the plunder with the proud. Whoever heeds instruction will prosper and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. The wise in heart are called discerning and the pleasant words promote instruction. Folly punishes fools but understanding is a fountain of life. Wise men’s hearts guide their mouths and the lips promote instruction. Pleasant words are a honeycomb, they are sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

WIT: Arrogance and pride lead the way to the path of destruction. If you allow your persona to project pride and arrogance to others you are bound to fall. Either they will go out of their way to prove you wrong and hope you fail to show you a thing or two. OR you will try so hard to live up to this level of self-righteousness and will lose track of smaller details. These smaller details will load on you until you falter. However, if you come out with love, humility and understanding then others will want to help you succeed as they respect you. You will get what you give.

TBV: 16:23 A wise man’s heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction.

Bible Study - Proverbs 16:9-16

WIS: In his heart a man plans his course but the Lord determines his steps. The lips of a king speak as oracles and his mouth should not betray justice. Honest scales and balances are from the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of His making. Kings detest wrongdoing as thrones are established through righteousness. Kings take pleasure in and value a man who speaks the truth. The wrath of a king is a messenger of death but wise men will appease it. As a king’s face brightens his favor brings life as a rain cloud in spring does. It is better to get wisdom than gold and to choose understanding rather than silver.

WIT: It is better to get wisdom than it is to get money or other perks. Think about all the times in school or work training scenarios where you had the opportunity to get more instruction from the teacher or to leave early. What did you do? I left early nine times out of ten. I vividly remember one time that I stayed and the impact it had on me. I was learning a type of inspection on the plane. We did the mandatory part and we had the option to leave early and I decided to stay and ask some more questions. What I learned helped me in doing inspections for the next 8 years and I still look back onto the advice given to me that day. I can only imagine what huge opportunities I have given up on other occasions.

TBV: 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

Bible Study - Proverbs 16:9-16

WIS: In his heart a man plans his course but the Lord determines his steps. The lips of a king speak as oracles and his mouth should not betray justice. What I learned helped me in doing inspections for the next 8 years and I still look back onto the advice given to me that day. I can only imagine what huge opportunities I have given up on other occasions.

TBV: 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

Bible Study - Proverbs 16:1-8

WIS: To the man belongs the plans of the heart but from the Lord comes the reply of the tongue. Man’s ways appear to be innocent to him however, motives are weighed by God. Commit all of your plans to the Lord and you will succeed. The Lord works out everything for His own ends. The Lord detests a proud heart and be sure that they will not go unpunished. Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for and through the fear of the Lord men avoid evil. If your ways are pleasing to the Lord, He makes even your enemies live at peace with you. Better a little gain with righteousness than much with injustice.

WIT: Doing things our way often appears to be the smartest and best path. It is rare that we consider the consequences in the eyes of God until we meet utter failure. It is then when our world is shattering around us that we choose to go to God for help. Even though we started off on our own path, He will still be there. He will weigh our initial motives and the sincerity of our pleas for help and will work His will. In fact, if we commit all of our plans to Him and make them in-line with His will then we will succeed.

TBV: 16:3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

Bible Study - Proverbs 15:25-33

WIS: The Lord tears the proud man’s house down but the boundaries of the widow are kept intact. The thoughts of the wicked are detested by the Lord but the pure thoughts are pleasing to Him. Greedy men bring trouble to the family but he who hates bribes will live. The righteous heart weighs its answers but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil. The Lord hears the prayers of the righteous but He is far from the wicked. Cheerful looks bring joy to the heart and good news gives health to the bones. He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home amongst the wise. He that ignores discipline despises himself but the one that heeds correction will gain understanding. The fear of the Lord teaches man wisdom. Humility comes before honor.

WIT: Pride, greed and wickedness are despised by the Lord. The Lord tears down the house of the proud! The Lord separates Himself from those that are greedy and wicked. Scary, as we all have moments of pride, greed and wicked thoughts! Maybe they do not consume you and you are not filled with these thoughts, nonetheless, God detests these qualities. This Proverb says that basically He will knock us down a notch or two when we are being proud.

The answer to being righteous is not telling everyone that you are righteous. If you are truly a good person, people will see that for themselves. Humility will win over pride and boasting. I would rather have a good heart and people never realize it than be seen by God as proud. To gain true honor you must start with a humble heart. Humility will deliver respect which in turn will produce honor.

TBV: 15:33 The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

Bible Study - Proverbs 15:17-24

WIS: It is better to eat vegetables made with love than a fattened calf made with hatred. Hot-tempered men stir dissension but patient men calm quarrels. The sluggard’s path is blocked by thorns but the way of the upright is a highway. Wise children bring joy to their father but foolish ones despise their mother. Folly excites those that lack judgment but those of understanding keep a straight course. Plans fail due to lack of counsel but succeed with many advisers. Joy is found with an apt and timely reply. The path of the wise leads upwards and away from the downward grave.

WIT: Someone who is quick to temper will make things escalate out of control very quickly. Situations handled patiently and with love are unlikely to spiral downwards. If someone has a different view than you that is normal. We are not all going to think the same way about everything. Do your best to see their perspective and even talk to others for advice if you are set on changing their minds. Getting angry will only stir the pot and neither of you will get what you want. The only benefit of losing your temper is that you feel better for that moment. However, later you almost always regret it!

TBV: 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

Bible Study - Proverbs 15:9-16

WIS: The Lord detests the way of the wicked but loves the pursuer of righteousness. Discipline awaits those that leave the path; those that hate correction will die. Death and destruction lie open before the Lord – how much more the hearts of men! Mockers hate correction and will not consult the wise. Happy hearts make the face cheerful but heartaches crush the spirit. The heart of the discerning seeks knowledge but the mouth of the fool feeds folly. The days of the oppressed are wretched but the cheerful heart has a continual feast. It is better to have only a little and fear God than to have much and live in turmoil.

WIT: Discipline awaits those that leave the path and ultimately death! The Lord has filled us with His Holy Spirit to guide us along His path. When we listen we grow spiritually and build up and investment in Heaven. When we choose not to listen we are coaxed with correction. The correction might be feeling like God has left when we are going through a tough time. We might have a heavy heart. Ultimately, God will leave us because our spirit is dead within us. After a certain point there is no breaking through a hardened heart.

TBV: 15:16 Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.

Bible Study - Proverbs 15:1-8

WIS: Gentle answers turn away wrath and harsh words stir up anger. The wise tongue commends knowledge but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. The eyes of the Lord are everywhere keeping watch over the wicked and the good. The healing tongue is a tree of life but the deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Fools spurn the discipline of their father but the prudent heed correction. The house of the righteous contains great treasure but the income of the wicked brings them trouble. Wise lips spread knowledge. The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked but the prayer of the upright pleases Him.

WIT: The house of the righteous is filled with treasure… This is not talking about material treasures. It is more of a happiness and fulfillment. There are many people who are filthy rich and are not happy or content, there is still something missing. Then there are those that have no worldly possessions and are completely satisfied. That is because these people live to enrich the lives of others. When you are righteous and help another human being you feel great. Giving an extra tip to a server leaves you feeling great about yourself. How do you feel when you stiff them or pass up that homeless man? Not good and often guilty. We explain the guilt away by saying they will misuse the money or the service was inadequate. Ever notice, you never need to explain why you do nice things? Those little acts of kindness really touch the hearts of others and in turn enrich yours.

TBV: 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Bible Study - Proverbs 14:28-35

WIS: Kings find glory in a large population but without subjects princes are ruined. Patient men display great understanding but the quick-tempered display folly. Life to the body comes from a heart at peace but envy will rot the bones. The oppressor of the poor shows content to the Maker but those who are kind to the needy honor God. The wicked are brought down when calamity comes but even in death the righteous have a refuge. Wisdom reposes in the hearts of the discerning and even among fools she will be known. Righteousness will exalt a nation but sin is a disgrace to any people. Kings will delight in wise servants but his wrath will fall on the shameful servant.

WIT: When your heart is at peace, you will be also. When it is spent longing for what others have you will rot from the core. We all see what others have and want it too. It is hard not to be jealous of the person that has the bigger house or newer car. However, there will always be someone who has it a little better. There will always be an inner longing for more. What keeps us motivated most of the time is to try for that new and improved item. It is not a bad thing to want to improve when the motives are pure. Strive to do things to help another or to glorify God.

TBV: 14:30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Bible Study - Proverbs 14:19-27

WIS: Evil men will bow to the presence of good. The poor are shunned but the rich have many friends. The one who despises his neighbor sins but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy. Those who plot evil go astray but the righteous find love and faithfulness. Hard work brings profits but mere talk leads to poverty. The wealth of the wise is their crown but the fool yields to folly. Truthful witnesses save lives but the false one is deceitful. He who fears the Lord is has a secure fortress and for his children it will be a refuge. Fear of the Lord is a fountain of life which turns a man from the snares of death.

WIT: Hard work brings profit and mere talk yields poverty. This should be the motto that we all tackle everything with. When we put our hearts and full efforts into the things that we do we are successful. Even if we do not yield the desired results we still learn very valuable lessons. Now to take advice from later in this passage that states the wealth of the wise is their crown. I believe this reinforces my first sentence by saying that hard work done wisely will bring the wealth and profits sought after.

TBV: 14:27 The fear of the Lord is as fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.

Bible Study - Proverbs 14:10-18

WIS: Each heart knows its own bitterness and no one else can share its joy. The wicked house will be destroyed but the righteous tent will flourish. The way that seems right to a man will lead to death. Even while laughing the heart still may ache and the joy may end in grief. The faithless will be repaid for their ways and the good rewarded for his. Simple men believe anything but the prudent gives thought before stepping. Wise men fear the Lord and shun evil but the fool is hotheaded and reckless. The quick-tempered man does foolish things and crafty men are hated. The simple inherit folly but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

WIT: Each of us has our own journey. No matter what happens we are faced with our image in the mirror. Even when we put on a strong face we can still be weak inside. We are concerned so often with how others view us that we do not care about how we view ourselves. ‘No one else can know that I am not perfect!’ ‘No one can know my fears!’ We are too busy trying to hide our hearts that we never experience the joy of sharing it!

TBV: 14:10 Each heart knows its own bitterness and no one else can share its joy.

Bible Study - Proverbs 14:1-9

WIS: The wise woman builds her house but the foolish one tears hers down with her hands. Those whose walk is upright fear the Lord but the devious despise Him. The talk of fools brings the rod to his back but the wise are protected by their lips. No oxen result in an empty manger, but the strength of an ox yields an abundant harvest. The truthful witness doesn’t deceive but the false one pours out lies. Mockers seek wisdom and find none but knowledge comes easy to the discerning. Knowledge will not be found on the lips of the foolish man. The wise give thought to their ways while the fools bring folly and deception. Fools mock making amends for their sins while the upright will find goodwill.

WIT: Those who mock the Christian faith and even many Christians seek out why their lives are filled with problems. Why must we keep suffering? There must be no God? Why would a loving-living God allow this? Jesus, Himself, said that our lives will be filled with tribulations. The reason many of us keep suffering is that we are continually making the same mistakes. Until we break the cycle and accept this we will never grow or get past this.

TBV: 14:6 The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.

Bible Study - Proverbs 13:19-25

WIS: It is sweet to the soul to have a longing fulfilled yet the fool detests turning from evil. If you walk with the wise you will be wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm. Misfortune finds the sinner but the righteous are rewarded with prosperity. Good men leave an inheritance for their grandchildren but the wealth of sinner’s is stored up for the righteous. A poor man’s field may produce abundant food but injustice will sweep it away. Spare the rod and you hate the child but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. Righteous eat till their heart is content but the wicked go hungry.

WIT: Proverbs 13:25 The righteous eat to their hearts' content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.

Again, this does not say that the believers of God will get all the food they want and the non-believers will never eat. This is talking about “Spiritual Food” (a term borrowed from Mike Telemekhos). Just as our bodies crave nourishment and our minds crave knowledge, our sprit also needs to be fed.

We become Christians and then never build on that foundation of faith. When we don’t feed our spiritual needs our faith waivers, just like our bodies would if we did not eat. It is important to continually remain in fellowship with others who are Christians and to continually learn and grow in your own walk.

Learn by studying the Bible a few verses a day. Download messages onto your iPod or computers (http://www.seacoast.org/resources/ is a great resource for this!). Listen to Christian music; there are plenty of groups out there that have the exact same sound as what is playing on your radio normally. Fellowship with others means talk about issues with others that are believers. Form a small group of people who want to learn more. Get involved at a church.

Be creative! Just feed your soul…it’s stomach is growling!

TBV: 13:20 He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

Bible Study - Proverbs 13:9-18

WIS: The light of the righteous shines bright but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. Pride breeds quarrels but wisdom is found in those who take advice. Dishonest money dwindles but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. Hope deferred makes the heart sick but hope fulfilled is a tree of life. He who scorns instruction pays for it but those who respect a command are rewarded. Wise teachers are like fountains of life that turn men away from the snares of death. Good understanding wins favor but the unfaithful way is hard. Prudent men act out of knowledge but fools expose their folly. Wicked messengers fall into trouble but the trusty brings healing. Ignore discipline and you will come to poverty but those that heed correction are honored.

WIT: The way of the unfaithful is hard. This is not a promise that the faithful will endure any less pain or tribulation. What this is insinuating is that those who have strong faith in the Lord have something much larger in their lives. God’s love is bigger than any problems that you may have. Relying on Him to get you through the tough times is like having floatation device in the ocean. With it you wait the course with optimism, without God you struggle to stay afloat on your own accord and are still stuck trying to find the shore. The problem is there either way but with God the path is easier!

TBV: 13:15 Good understanding wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful is hard.

Bible Study - Proverbs 13:1-8

WIS: The wise son listens to his father’s instruction. From the fruit of the lips men enjoy good things but the unfaithful have a craving for violence. He who guards his lips guards his life but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin. The sluggard craves but gets nothing. The diligent will have their desires fully satisfied. The righteous hate what is false and guard their integrity but the wicked bring shame and disgrace while their wickedness overthrows them. One man pretends to be rich and has nothing while the other pretends to be poor and possesses great wealth. A man’s riches may ransom his life but poor men hear no threat.

WIT: The humble man has little to lose. When you are not boastful and do not spend your time building your own ego, others can’t knock you down a notch. Those who run their mouths are usually trying to make up for some type of insecurity, but the person who is secure with his or her abilities has no need to boast.

He who has much has much to lose. Bill Gates is not likely to rob a bank because if he was caught the consequences to his lifestyle would be large. Contrast that to the person who has very little. Robbing the bank might be the only option that makes sense to them, “Hey, what have I got to lose?”

TBV: 13:3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

Bible Study - Proverbs 12:19-28

WIS: Truthful lips endure forever but the lying tongue only lasts a moment. Those who plot evil harness deceit in their hearts but the there is joy for those that promote peace. Harm does not fall on the righteous but trouble will fill the lives of the wicked. The Lord detests lying lips but delights in those that are truthful. Prudent men keep their knowledge to themselves but the fool blurts out folly. Diligent hands rule but laziness ends in slave labor. An anxious heart weighs a man down but kind words cheer him up. Righteous men are cautious in friendship but the way of the wicked leads them astray. The lazy man does not roast his game but the diligent prizes his possessions. In the way of the righteous there is life along that path is immortality.

WIT: “Excuses only make you feel better,” - Jamey Elms. No one likes to be around those that lie. In fact the lies you tell and the excuses you make only last a moment in the grand scheme of things. The only part of our lies that remain is the pain in the hearts of the person you lied to and the guilt remaining in our heart. Pain is the only product of a lie and lying lips. It is very difficult to tell the truth to each other even though it creates much less pain. The truth can have a sting when it is first told but the sting goes away and the truth endures without guilt and pain. It is easier to lie in the beginning and that is the lazy way out. Put the effort into your relationships so that truth and honesty are welcomed and that will reduce the sting that you receive.

TBV: 12:19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

Bible Study - Proverbs 12:10-18

WIS: Righteous men care for the needs of their animals but the even the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel. The man who works his land will live in abundance but the judgment is lacked by the man who chases fantasies. The wicked desire to plunder but the roots of the righteous will flourish. Evil men are trapped by sinful talk but the righteous escape trouble. Men are filled with good things from the fruit of their lips just as the works of his hands reward him. The fool’s way seems right to him but the wise listen to advice. Fools show annoyance quickly but the prudent overlooks an insult. The truthful witness gives honest testimony but the false one tells lies. Reckless words pierce like a sword but the wise tongue heals!

WIT: I can not even begin to think of every time that I was wrong! I am sure that already this morning, I have been many times. Whether it was by what I said, thought or the actions taken. We are wrong usually more often than we are right, at least I am.

Why is it so hard for me to realize that other people’s advice might have value? I remember telling a friend that he was doing the wrong thing in his business. I wasn’t rude, just the facts. However, he assured me that it was the best thing and the only possible solution.

It was hard for him to hear my advice because he was in the thick of things. As an outsider, I was not attached to the decision. I was only concerned with my friend’s best interest. He was concerned with not being wrong. It turns out that his way was not the best way and our ideas together would have been the best! Listen to others!

TBV: 12:15 The way of the fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

Bible Study - Proverbs 12:1-9

WIS: He who loves discipline loves knowledge but he who hates correction is stupid. Good men obtain favor from the Lord but the crafty man is condemned. Wickedness will not establish a man but righteousness cannot be uprooted. A wife with noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones. The just have righteous plans but the wicked’s advice is deceitful. The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood but the speech of the upright will rescue them. Wicked men are overthrown but the house of the righteous stands firm. Men are praised according to their wisdom but warped minds are despised. It is better to be a nobody with a servant than a somebody with no food.

WIT: We are looked at for who we are and what we know. If we are kind at heart, that should show through to others. We should not have to deceive or pretend to be someone important in order to impress others. Others are able to see us for who we really are. Those that need to add material items and take credit for other people’s work to win awards are deceitful and others will know it. When we speak and act it shows what we know. If we know nothing, that will be evident for all to see. Gaining wisdom in a topic will bring others to you to listen.

TBV: 12:3 A man can not establish through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.

Bible Study - Proverbs 11:25-31

WIS: Generous men prosper and those that refresh others will be refreshed. People curse those that hoard grain but blessings will crown those willing to sell. Those that seek good find goodwill but evil comes to those whom search for it. Whoever trusts in riches will fall but the righteous will thrive. Those that being trouble on their family will only inherit wind and the fool will serve the wise. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life and the wise wins souls. If the righteous receive their due on earth the ungodly and sinners will receive much more.

WIT: Evil breeds evil and generosity breeds generosity. People that enter our lives eat from the fruits that we produce. If we are righteous down to the root even our fruit will be righteous. We can not say one thing and then walk a different walk. We have to follow the example that Jesus has provided. We need to nurture ourselves from the roots first and that will spread to our cores and then to our extremities which are producing fruit.

TBV: 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.

Bible Study - Proverbs 11:17-24

WIS: Kind men benefit themselves but cruel men bring trouble upon themselves. Wicked men earn deceptive wages but the righteous reaps a sure reward and truly attain life. He who pursues evil goes to his death. The Lord detests a perverse heart but delights in those who are blameless in their ways. Have faith that the wicked will not go unpunished and that the righteous will go free. A beautiful woman that does not show discretion is like the gold ring in a pig’s snout. Righteous desires end well but the hope of the wicked end in wrath. He who gives freely gains even more but he who withholds will surely come to poverty.

WIT: Doesn’t it feel great to give something to another just because?! It could be a gift to a friend simply out of love. Maybe it is a few dollars to a homeless person or a rescued stray dog. Even giving to charity or money in the collection boxes in stores feels incredible. All of these things feel so good because we are giving of ourselves and expect nothing in return. We truly and simply love on another!

I am not sure why we are extremely selfish as often when it feels so good to give. It is easy to walk past another who is in need because we justify to ourselves that they are going to misuse the money or gift. When in reality God may have placed us in their paths just for that moment to help. Maybe God wants us to give and get that good feeling within us to refresh our spirits. That is the reward that you receive when you give to another.

TBV: 11:24 One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.

Bible Study - Proverbs 11:9-16

WIS: With the mouth the godless will destroy their neighbors but the righteous will escape. When the righteous prosper or when the wicked perish the city rejoices with shouts of joy. The blessing of the upright exalts the city but the mouth of the wicked it will be destroyed. A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor but the man with understanding holds his tongue. Gossip betrays confidence but the trustworthy can keep a secret. With lack of guidance a city will fall but with many advisers victory is certain. He who puts up a security for others will suffer be he who refuses to strike hands in pledge is safe. The kindhearted will gain respect as the ruthless will only gain wealth!

WIT: People love to talk. Unfortunately, it is rarely something that is useful to others. More often than not it is gossip about a neighbor, a friend, coworker, family member or even a celebrity. Although, I think that everyone gossips to an extent, most of us get annoyed by those that never stop. Their lives are not driven by the successes that others have instead they await something bad to happen. There are no secrets and that is why no one trusts them. Be the person that can keep an embarrassing secret of a friend. Most importantly build up one another and instead of talking about how great YOU are talk about how great THEY are!

TBV: 11:16 A kindhearted woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth.

Bible Study - Proverbs 11:1-8

WIS: The Lords does not like dishonest scales but accurate weights and honesty are his delight. Wherever there is pride soon will come disgrace but those with humility have wisdom. The upright are guided by their integrity and the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. Wealth will mean nothing on the day of wrath but righteousness will deliver from death. Righteousness of the blameless make a straight way for them but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright will deliver them but the unfaithful are trapped by their evil desires. When wicked men die their hope perishes and all that he expected from his own power becomes nothing. The righteous man is rescued from trouble and the trouble will befall the wicked instead.

WIT: Being honest is telling the truth when asked a question. Integrity, on the other hand, is the highest form of honesty. Integrity is being honest even when you don’t have to be. Those with integrity are bound to live at peace with themselves and others. It is not easy to look at yourself in the mirror or into the eyes of others when you are hiding something.

When you are not honest you now harness two stories; one is the lie you told and the other is the truth. Living as a double agent you are required to continue to lie to further hide the truth. This creates much more stress in your life than what is truly needed. Instead come clean from the beginning and live with the consequences. It will be much better than living with the guilt and the wrath that will befall you once the truth is discovered.

TBV: 11:3 The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.

Bible Study - Proverbs 10:25-32

WIS: After the storm has passed the wicked are gone but the righteous are standing firm forever. As vinegar is to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, the same goes for the sluggard to those who send him. Revering the Lord will lengthen a life but the wicked’s years are cut short. The righteous benefit from joy but hopes of the wicked come to nothing. The righteous receive refuge from the Lord as the evil find ruin. The righteous will never be uprooted but the wicked will not remain in the land. The mouth of the righteous gives wisdom but a perverse tongue will be cut out. The lips of the righteous know what is fitting but the mouth of the wicked only knows perversion.

WIT: Those that are firmly rooted in God’s word can weather any storm. We all go through things that are extremely difficult. Falling back onto the wisdom we gain from the Bible is what gives us the peace and hope to make it through those times. Faith is staying strong when the outcome is not known. Reading and living God’s word gives us the faith we need.

TBV: 10:25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.

Bible Study - Proverbs 10:17-24

WIS: He who heeds discipline shows the way to life while the one who ignores it leads others astray. He who hides his hatred is a liar and whoever spreads slander is a fool. When words are many sin will be present but he who holds his tongue is wise. The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver but the wicked heart is worthless. Righteous lips nourish but fools die from lack of judgment. The Lord’s blessings bring wealth and there is no added trouble. Fools find pleasure in evil but the understanding delight in wisdom. What the wicked dreads will overtake but righteous desires will be granted.

WIT: Those that hate discipline are destined for failure. What is worse is that those same people often appeal to others. We all want to take the easy way out, it is in our nature to get rich quick or miracle overnight diets. In reality we need to step up to the plate and make an effort to improve. It only takes a moment each day to gain vastly in every area of our life. If you work out for 5 minutes today and slowly add more time you will build momentum and make large improvements. That is true for every part of our life. When we choose to waste the day and then search for the miracles we are only fooling ourselves and bringing everyone with us!

TBV: 10:17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

Bible Study - Proverbs 10:9-16

WIS: The honest man walks with security while the one that takes crooked paths will be discovered. Someone who plans to be malicious will cause grief and the chattering fool comes to ruin. The mouth of the righteous will be a fountain of life but violence will overwhelm the mouth of the wicked. Hatred stirs dissension but love will cover all wrongs. Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning but a rod is for the back of those that lack judgment. Wise men store knowledge while the mouth of the fool invites ruin. Wealth of the rich is a fortified city but poverty is the ruin of the poor. Wages of the righteous bring life but the income of the wicked is punishment.

WIT: When we do something wrong we are not secure on the inside. If you have done something to wrong a friend or family member you feel very guilty especially in their presence. You have the suspicion that they know what you did. Like the “Tell-Tale Heart” your guilt will eat you alive. If you strive to live with integrity you will not have this worry and guilt. Speak the truth and strive for wisdom and live happy!

TBV: 10:9 The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

Bible Study - Proverbs 10:1-8

WIS: A wise son will bring joy to his father but the foolish one brings grief to his mother. Ill-gotten treasures are of no value but righteousness saves us from death. The Lord will not let the righteous go hungry. Lazy hands make a man poor but diligence brings wealth. He who gathers crops in the summer is wise but he who sleeps through the harvest is disgraceful. Blessings crown the head of the righteous but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous will be a blessing as the name of the wicked will rot. The wise heart will accept commands but a chattering fool will come to ruin.

WIT: Getting something of worldly value by ignoring our own values makes that item useless. If you sell your personal integrity to get more money or some sort of “reward” you will begin to rot inside. By being able to pass over beliefs once makes it easier to do it the second time around. Moral laziness will begin to set in. You begin to allow things to happen that go against your core beliefs and who you truly are. Instead we need to harvest the fields of our lives. That means to work on becoming stronger rooted in what is right and stand against what is wrong.

TBV: 10:4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.

Bible Study - Proverbs 9:10-18

WIS: Before you can gain true wisdom and understanding you must respect God. Through the Lord your days will be many. If you are wise you will be rewarded; mockers will suffer alone. Those with folly are loud and undisciplined. Folly sits at the door of her house at the highest point of the city calling out to those that pass by tempting those on the righteous paths. She says, “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!” Little do they know the dead are there and her guests are in the depths of the grave.

WIT: Once we get onto the path of righteousness the work is not done, it has only begun. There will constantly be people tempting us to get us to do the wrong thing. They are constantly pulling us in and even mocking us when we refuse. It is not easy to do the right thing and sometimes temptation is packaged so nicely. The easy road is often the wrong one. It might be easier now but in time it catches up to us and will have grave consequences that we might not be able to live with. Think of the possible consequences of your decisions. Doing things that are not in God’s will could place us out of His will totally!

TBV: 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Bible Study - Proverbs 9:1-9

Proverbs 9:1-9

WIS: Wisdom has built her house and there are 7 pillars. She has prepared a feast with meat and wine and the table is set. She sent out her maids to call from the highest points in the city to the simple and those that lack judgment. She says to come and eat of this meal and to leave your simple ways to walk in the way of understanding. “Whoever corrects a mocker invites insult” Rebuke a mocker and he will hate you but rebuke a wise man and he will love you. Instruct a wise man to make him wiser and add to his learning.

WIT: We are never done learning. We get to the pinnacle of our career or think that we have learned all there is. However, the world is constantly evolving the information and theories. There is a new or better way surfacing everyday. We get too caught up in the thinking that our way is best. We even begin to mock the new ways and refuse to listen to reason. When this happens we are doomed to fail. If we do not continue to learn eventually what we know is obsolete and we are left in the dust.

TBV: 9:9 Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.
